When a content refresh beats a full rebuild
Contrary to most peoples’ expectations, sometimes, we’ll actually tell them that they don’t need a website overhaul. Sometimes, all you really need is better copy on the pages you have.
We get a call every couple of weeks from a business owner who thinks they need to rebuild their website. It’s getting old, not receiving as many calls for business...etc. When we take a look at their website, it’s usually technically sound. The site loads quickly, is mobile-friendly, the form works. What needs improvement? Messaging. More information about the services/products they offer, new photography if yours is five years old...etc.
That’s not a rewrite, it’s an edit.
If you meet most of these criteria then it’s very likely that a refresh would achieve the desired outcome at a fraction of the cost. Can you identify your site in the following?
- Good news: Your website works great on phones without pinching or horizontal scrolling.
- Pages now load in a couple seconds instead of eight seconds.
- You or someone on your team can easily update the copy and add new photos, no developer required.
- Forms and phone links will always work when testing.
- It’s saying the wrong thing in a way that’s still modern.
A complete rebuild is the only honest option. If your website suffers from any of the following, you're wasting your money trying to keep it alive: Your website was built before responsive design became a thing. If you can't update the text yourself you're going to need to call someone. Your website's platform is no longer receiving security updates.
One of our home service/salon clients from Royal Palm Beach/Wellington came to us looking for a redesign of her website but money was tight due to the slow-down during hurricane season. So, rather than rebuild the whole site we suggested an alternative. We would rebuild the 3 pages of the site that bring in the majority of the calls. Then, over the following months, rebuild the rest of the site.
Not sure what kind of website your small business needs? Totally normal. Honest advice about small business website design is how we’ve kept clients since 2010. We’d rather be helpful and honest than charge for something you don’t need. Tell us more about your business and we’ll be happy to offer our insight. It’ll only take a few minutes.
This focus continues into the practical aspect.
