How pricing works for small business website projects
Price is not necessarily a question that is asked with pleasure on either side. But there are basically 3 options in our industry. 1) a project fee is one price for the project. 2) an hourly fee, 3) a monthly fee in the form of an advertising plan, we spread the cost of developing out over a year or more. None of these are a rip-off, they're just appropriate to different situations.
Flat project prices work great when you can easily identify all of the elements that make up the project, including pages, photos, forms, etc. Hourly pricing can be helpful for smaller projects, odd jobs or fixes. Monthly advertising plans may be helpful if you’re tight on cash-flow, don’t want to make a large up-front investment, or just want to make sure that your website is always fresh and working for you like a faithful employee.
What moves the number? Page count, mostly. The mobile detailer that needs a simple five-page website has a much smaller job than the plumber that needs thirty service pages with bios for each technician, image gallery and more. Projects with lots of extras-booking and ecommerce abilities, lots of service area pages, copywriting from scratch, photography-also take more hours and move up in cost.
The build is only half the bill. Many website owners miss this, and fall for quotes for development that ignore ongoing costs like hosting, domain registration, email hosting, website security, website maintenance. It’s not cheaper. It’s just incomplete.
Before you sign that agreement, hold on and ask yourself these questions.
- What exactly is included, page by page?
- When our project is complete who will own the site/domain?
- What does it cost to change text or add a page later?
- Are you offering the hosting, email, and security individually, or is it available in a package?
- What would happen if you needed help in 6 months?
Our process and cost is outlined in writing before we get started. Unexpected costs can sour a good business relationship because contractors and salon owners in Royal Palm Beach and Wellington live by a margin. We can offer a professional, agency-level service because we don't have agency-level costs.
